The wood I use for many of my signs, as well as the letters themselves, is the decay resistant "Larch" species of pine. It is very stable and takes stain well and looks gorgeous in an oiled state. I can also use oak, cherry, ash, hard maple, or even hickory. It's mostly up to whatever you want. The "larch" stands up best to the various weather conditions nature has in store for signage left exposed to the elements. The lettering will either be painted with oil based paints or oiled to seal the wood.
